Hammam Essalihine is located just 6 km from Khenchela in eastern Algeria, approximately 545 km from Algiers. The ancient city, once known as Mascoula, lies within the Aurès Mountains in the El Hamma municipality, formerly part of Numidia. This location not only boasts natural beauty but also historical significance.
A Flourishing Flavian Era
The complex, built during Emperor Vespasian’s rule (69-79 AD), showcases the prosperity of the Flavian era. Inscriptions reveal that the site saw construction or refurbishment under his reign. His leadership marked an era of development and stability in Roman history.
Architectural Wonders: Pools and Design
The Hammam Essalihine complex ingeniously utilizes both hot and cold groundwater. Its construction features stones and houses several pools, each unique in design and purpose.
- Rectangular Pool: This imposing sight is 14 meters long, 10 meters wide, and 1.45 meters deep, encircled by columns.
- Circular Pool: With a diameter of 8 meters and a depth of 1.45 meters, this pool once boasted a domed cover, adding to its grandeur.
The site also includes three rooms, each equipped with four pools.

During the French colonial period (1830-1962), additional rooms for bathing and sleeping were constructed. Post-independence, Algeria expanded the site, adding modern bathing facilities, hotels, and restaurants.
