The Enigmatic Builder and His Motives

Edward Leedskalnin was 26 when his fiancée, Agnes Skuvst, abruptly left him in Latvia. This event prompted his move to the United States. Soon after, he claimed to have cured his tuberculosis using magnets. He then dedicated over 28 years to building Coral Castle, insisting on privacy and rarely allowing anyone to see him work.

Mysterious Construction Techniques

Leedskalnin used minimal tools, one being a “perpetual motion holder.” Despite his secrecy, some teenagers reported seeing him work, suggesting he made the heavy stones float like balloons. Leedskalnin originally named his creation “Ed’s Place” in Florida City around 1923. In 1936, he moved the entire castle ten miles north to its current location to maintain his privacy. He continued his work there until his death in 1951.

The Castle’s Features

The castle features include a two-story tower where Leedskalnin lived, an accurate sundial, and a polar telescope. Furniture carved from stone includes a heart-shaped table and rocking chairs. The most famous piece is the 9-ton gate, which once moved so smoothly a child could open it. However, after it ceased to function properly in 1986, it required significant effort to repair.

Myths and Legends
