The Monument’s Origins
The Big Merino was officially unveiled on September 20, 1985, at 98 Hume Street. It was the brainchild of brothers Attila and Louis Mokany and designed by architect Gary Dutallis. Adelaide builder Glenn Senner took six months to construct this impressive structure. The ram is modeled after a local stud ram from the Bullamallita property and is made of steel, wire mesh, and reinforced concrete. Initially, the Big Merino weighed 97 tons and stood 18 meters long.

Relocation and Revitalization
In 1992, the construction of a bypass on the Hume Highway led to a significant drop in visitors. The Big Merino, once a bustling stop for tourists, saw a decline in foot traffic. To revive its popularity, the grand structure was relocated on May 26, 2007. It moved 800 meters closer to the new highway interchange, near a service station. This move rejuvenated Rambo, now weighing around 100 tons, and included new legs and an underbelly constructed by Marshall Judd.

Visitor Experience
The Big Merino is more than just a statue. The ground floor houses a gift shop, and the second floor features a wool display. Visitors can climb to the top and gaze out through Rambo’s eyes for a panoramic view of the local area. The gift shop offers a wide range of high-quality products made from fine Australian merino wool. From ugg boots to hand-dyed scarves, the shop caters to both local and international visitors. The permanent exhibition by Australian Wool Innovation showcases the 200-year history of wool in Australia and the wool processing journey.

Conclusion
The Big Merino stands as a monumental tribute to Goulburn’s rich wool industry heritage. Its relocation and revitalization have ensured that it remains a beloved landmark, attracting visitors and celebrating the region’s wool legacy. Whether you’re interested in history, shopping for unique wool products, or simply enjoying the view, Rambo offers a unique and memorable experience.
